(Continued from previous page)Papal Rome's Christology is heretical!
Papal Rome wrests Scripture so that we have to work for our salvation!
It denies Christ's exclusive role as mediator between God and man, making Mary "co-mediatrix";
it denies the exclusivity of His redemptive work, making Mary "co-redemptrix";
Vatican II credits Mary with a perpetual "salvific role";
"by her constant intercession, Mary continues to obtain the graces we need for eternal salvation";
it denies the sufficiency of His redemptive work, declaring that the redeemed must, in addition to Christ's suffering for them upon the cross, suffer for their own sins here and/or in purgatory, etc.;
it presents Jesus perpetually as an infant or child subject to His mother;
In conclusion, the 'Christ' of Papal Roman Catholicism is just as false as its 'Mary' and just as much 'another Jesus' (2 Corinthians 11:4) as the 'Jesus' of Mormonism (supposedly the brother of Satan!) - or any other cult - and Papal Rome insults God by giving Mary attributes that only the godhead can possibly have and, incredibly, praying to her more than they pray to Almighty God!
Why can't the supposed ekklesiae ('churches') of 'Christendom' admit this truth?
Several times in 'The Agony of Deceit' it is stated that 'Protestants and Catholics embrace the same apostolic creeds'. This is a partially true but seriously misleading statement. The implication is that the creeds are an all-encompassing statement of Biblical Christianity, which they are not. Furthermore, there is a vast difference between the meaning Catholics and Protestants attach to what the creeds say. For example, while affirming that Christ "suffered under Pontius Pilate," Catholicism teaches that His suffering was insufficient and, in addition to Christ's suffering, we must each suffer for our sins in order to be saved, Papal Rome teaches that we can even suffer for others' salvation (The Apostolic Constitution of Jan. 1, 1967, Indulgentiarum Doctrina, #1687, urges Catholics to carry "each one his own cross in expiation of their sins and of the sins of others ... assist[ing] their brothers to obtain salvation from God") - which is rank heresy to Biblical Christians! Yet 'The Agony of Deceit' implies that Catholics mean by the creeds the same thing as Protestants - an inexcusable and deadly error in a book by eminent Christian scholars written to point out errors within the church!
Though The Agony of Deceit, like Scripture Twisting and other similar books produced by a variety of writers from 'Christian churches', contain much that commends them, their approval of Papal Roman Catholicism is tragically misleading. The false portrait of Roman Catholicism persists in The Agony of Deceit and, after correctly condemning the sale of indulgences that led Martin Luther to nail his 95 theses to the chapel door at Wittenberg's castle, the editor/compiler of The Agony of Deceit, Michael Horton, writes: "It would not be fair, of course, to interpret the entire history and character of Roman Catholicism by this tragic fund-raising scheme...." (p244). The implication is that Papal Rome has changed for the better, which is false. Though not sold as blatantly now, indulgences are still an important part of Catholicism's salvation - the false gospel of Salvation by Works (type 'indulgences' into our 'Google' search box on our home page)!
The FREE GIFT of SALVATION through FAITH ALONE in the Lord Jesus Christ ALONE is made clear by numerous Scriptures, e.g.:
Ephesians 2:8-10 (NASB) - 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
2 Timothy 1:8-9 (NASB) - 8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God, 9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity,
Titus 3:5-7 (NASB) - 5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
The deviation from Biblical Christianity by Papal Rome goes right to the heart of the faith - to salvation itself - and thus affects the eternal destiny of all those who are deceived by the False Gospel of the Popes. Papal Roman Catholicism rejects salvation by faith and preaches a false gospel of works that cannot save, for their doctrine of Salvation is not in Christ but in the Church through submission to its edicts and sacraments!
The Basic Catechism of Christian Doctrine of Papal Rome calls the sacraments "the chief means of our salvation." The first of the seven sacraments is baptism (p504 - Baptism is the first and chief sacrament of forgiveness of sins because it unites us with Christ, who died for our sins and rose for our justification, so that "we too might walk in newness of life"), which is performed upon 98 percent of Catholics as infants and is declared in Canon 849 to be the means "by which men and women are freed from their sins, are reborn as children of God....". The Basic Catechism declares that baptism "is necessary for salvation...cleanses us from original sin, makes us Christians...." - but Scripture tells us plainly and clearly:
1 Peter 3:18-22 (NASB) - 18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; 19 in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, 20 who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. 21 Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you - not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience - through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.
Papal Rome is not the only cult that misunderstands these verses - even though v21 clearly points to the meaning of baptism: 'NOT the removal of dirt from the flesh' - or any kind of cleansing - 'but an appeal to God for a good conscience - through the resurrection of Jesus Christ'. When Peter wrote that Noah and his family were "saved by water," he was careful to explain that this illustration does not imply salvation by baptism. Baptism is a "figure" of that which does save us, namely, "the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 3:21). Water on the body, or the body placed in water, cannot remove the stains of sin - as 'NOT the removal of dirt from the flesh' makes clear. Only the blood of Jesus Christ can do that:
1 John 1:6-10 (NASB) - 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;
7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.
1 John 2:1-2 (NASB) - 1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; 2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
Baptism saves us from one thing: a bad conscience. Peter had already told his readers that a good conscience was important to a successful witness (see 1 Peter 3:16 - 'keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame' - and Peter had suffered badly in his early witness when he denied Christ: John 18:13-27) - and a part of that "good conscience" is being faithful to our commitment to Christ as expressed in baptism.
The word translated 'answer' (in 1 Peter 3:21) is Greek: ἐπερώτημα - eperōtēma, pronounced ep-er-o'-tay-mah which is a legal term meaning "a pledge, a demand." When a person was signing a contract, he would be asked, "Do you pledge to obey and fulfill the terms of this contract?" His answer had to be, "Yes, I do," or he could not sign. When converts were prepared for baptism, they would be asked if they intended to obey God and serve Him, and to break with their sinful past. If they had reservations in their hearts, or deliberately lied, they would not have a good conscience if, under pressure of persecution, they denied the Lord - as Peter had done (John 18:13-27). So, Peter reminded them of their baptismal testimony to encourage them to be true to Christ.
Biblical ekklesiae ('churches') recognize two ordinances clearly and simply established by Jesus Christ for His people to observe: baptism and the Lord's Supper. The Lord's Supper is also called 'The Communion' as here:
1 Corinthians 10:16 (KJV) - The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion [Greek: κοινωνία - koinōnía, pronounced koy-nohn-ee'-ah meaning partnership, i.e. (literally) participation, social intercourse, communion, fellowship (e.g. 1 Peter 10:16)] of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion [Greek: κοινωνία - koinōnía] of the body of Christ?
Papal Rome calls this simple ordinance 'The Eucharist', which means "the giving of thanks" from the Greek word used here:
Luke 22:19-20 (KJV) - And he took bread, and gave thanks [Greek: εὐχαριστέω - eucharistéō, pronounced yoo-khar-is-the'-o - meaning to be grateful, i.e. (actively) to express gratitude (towards); especially, to say grace at a meal, give thanks, be thankful], and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
We recognize that the Lord Jesus Christ took the cup and the loaf - the ingredients of a common meal in that day - and transformed them into a meaningful spiritual experience for believers. However, the value of the experience depends on the condition of the hearts of those who participate; and this was the problem at Corinth which Paul had to deal with just as it is still the problem for Papal Rome which has converted this simple ordinance into a sacrament called 'The Mass', which their Catechism declares to be "one and the same Sacrifice with that of the Cross, inasmuch as Christ... continues to offer himself...on the altar, through the ministry of his priests." Canon 904 states that "the work of redemption is continually accomplished in the mystery of the Eucharistic Sacrifice," thus denying Christ's triumphant "It is finished!" at Calvary:
John 19:28-30 (KJV) - After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, 'I thirst'. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to His mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, He said, 'It is finished' [Greek: τελέω - teléō, pronounced tel-eh'-o - meaning: to end, i.e. complete, execute, conclude, discharge (a debt) - accomplish, make an end, expire, fill up, finish, go over, pay, perform]: and He bowed his head, and gave up the ghost (spirit).
Of the last sayings of Christ on the cross, none is more important or more poignant than, "It is finished." Found only in the Gospel of John , the Greek word translated "It is finished!" is an accounting term that means "paid in full." When Jesus uttered those words, He was declaring that the debt owed to Almighty God by all of mankind - the debt of sin - was wiped away completely and forever. Papal Rome is guilty of 'wresting Scripture' - as Peter warned - in order to create their evil, money-seeking kingdom which continues to keep Jesus on the cross to gain filthy lucre:
2 Peter 3:14-18 (NASB) - 14 Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, 16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. 17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness, 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
Thus it is that popular Papal Roman Catholic websites answer 'what-does-the-word-eucharist-mean' in this twisted manner, e.g.:
'Besides referring to the entire celebration of the Eucharist, the word is also used even more specifically to refer to the bread and wine that are transformed into the body and blood of Jesus.'
Any Christian relying on the Bible alone to gain knowledge of God will immediately recognize the cultish 'knight-jump exegesis' required in this typical 'Emperor's New Clothes' ploy of Papal Rome - adding to Scripture without any support (other than an appeal to mythical 'Tradition'!) to try and gain the desired result - Jesus crucified again and again for monetary gain and in defiance of Scripture, which warns:
Hebrews 6:4-8 (NASB) - 4 For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. 7 For ground that drinks the rain which often falls on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God; 8 but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned.
Anyone becoming a Christian by reading or hearing the Word of God and then surrendering that knowledge to the heresies of the Cult of Papal Rome - in believing the Lord Jesus Christ is re-crucified repeatedly at the beck and call of their false priesthood - needs to consider the most obvious evidence against their pathetic eisegesis. Simply read the accounts of the 'Last Supper':
Luke 22:14-20 (KJV) - And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
In verse 20 the truth is made clear by the Words of Jesus: 'This cup is the new testament'; that is, the wine, representing blood, is the symbol of the new covenant, by which God grants remission of sins through the atoning sufferings of Jesus. Papal Rome tries to make people understand the expressions in Luke and Mark ("This is my body" and "This is my blood" - Mark 14:24) literally so that they can maintain that when the bread and wine are consecrated by their priests, they become really and truly the body and blood of Christ, although to the senses they remain as before. Thus they also create other sacramental processions which have no parallel in Scripture, where they bear their 'consecrated elements' before crowds of their duped disciples who pay divine honours to them!
Examining the other main account of the 'Last Supper' we note the same important points:
Mark 14:22-25 (NASB) - 22 While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is My body." 23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, "This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 "Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."The Mass: Error Versus Truth
Can you see the simple, basic points which demolish Papal Rome's inventions?
Scripture tells us clearly that the Lord Jesus Christ was literally present in the flesh with the disciples and handed the bread and the cup of wine ('I will not drink of the fruit of the vine') to them. There is no mention anywhere in Scripture of a new priesthood being formed that would hand bread and wine to disciples or that these 'elements' were converted, literally, into His 'Body' and 'Blood' at this 'Last Supper'. So, there He was in their midst and giving absolutely no indication whatsoever that the bread and wine ever literally became His 'Body' and 'Blood'! One boy demolished 'The Emperor's New Clothes' scam (the short 'fairy tale' written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen) because he did not know what he was supposed to see and simply expressed the truth - the deceived Emperor was naked! But in Papal Rome no one dare speak the truth - because they will be excommunicated - so they all continue in the same deception taking simple 'elements' from the hands of their paedophile priesthood.
This 'doctrine of demons' (1 Timothy 4:1-3) invented by Papal Rome is just one of many in their deceptive arsenal and the comparative list below [where the Catechism of the Catholic Church is shown in square brackets in the Left Hand Column] reveals how:
[Numbers in square-brackets in the Left Hand Column are from the Catechism of the Catholic

How the Bible easily destroys Papal Rome's claims for its fake priesthood!
An intelligent child can find ample Scriptures to refute Papal Rome's vile persecutions and Inquisitions!
There is not a single verse of Scripture to support Papal Rome's 'doctrines of demons' (1 Timothy 4:1-3) and the Book of Hebrews alone totally destroys Papal Rome's pretensions to the existence of a 'ministerial priesthood to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross' (Point 6) and also shows that the Lord Jesus Christ is the High Priest who alone (Hebrews 9:24-28) 'appear(s) before the face of God for us ... not to offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place year by year with blood not his own ... but now once at the end of the ages hath he been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself'!
James G. McCarthy's book should be read by all Papal Roman Catholics and all who would claim the name of Christ as Lord and Saviour - particularly if they desire, as they should, to witness to Papal Roman Catholics who are going to a lost eternity because of the following FACTS:
The Popes of Rome present 'another Jesus' (2 Corinthians 11v4) and 'another gospel' (Galatians 1v6-9) just as Jesus and His apostles warned. Papal Rome rejects salvation by faith and preaches a false gospel of works that cannot save. As shown briefly above and in detail in our many replies to e-mails, Papal Rome claims that salvation is not in Christ but in the Church of Rome through submission to its decrees and sacraments.
How the Lord Jesus Christ refuted Papal Rome's 'Eucharist' when He instructed His disciples about deceptions to come!
Before reading the following passages, reflect on this conversation between the Lord Jesus Christ and His disciples:
Luke 9:51-56 (NASB) - 51 When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem; 52 and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him. 53 But they did not receive Him, because He was traveling toward Jerusalem. 54 When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?" 55 But He turned and rebuked them, [and said, "You do not know what kind of spirit you are of; 56 for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them."] And they went on to another village.
You may use a Bible translation with a footnote that states: 'Early manuscripts do not contain bracketed portion'. We have discussed 'the KJV (which does not include this portion) versus other translations' debate in other places, but one of the questions you should ask yourself when reading this passage from Luke should involve the nature of men who claimed to be acting on God's commandment - or following the Bible - actually demanding the persecution and death of those who disagreed with their version of Christianity.
Perhaps combine that line of thought with another gem from the Lord Jesus Christ:
Mark 9:38-41 (NASB) - 38 John said to Him, "Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us." 39 But Jesus said, "Do not hinder him, for there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name, and be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me. 40 "For he who is not against us is for us. 41 "For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because of your name as followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward.
When you read of Papal Roman Catholics and 'Protestants' persecuting and killing each other and, particularly, those who existed long before the 'Reformation' (such as the Waldensians and Hussites):
$ which spirit are they of?
$ if they are living a solidly Christian life based on the Word of God and even performing miracles in Jesus' Name, should we hinder them?
$ are they against Jesus when they disagree with the un-Biblical doctrines of Rome and of some early 'Protestant' doctrines?
$ what was Paul's advice when there was division over doctrine:
Romans 16:17-18 - Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. 18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. (cf. 1 Timothy 1:3-7)
1 Corinthians 11:18-19 (NASB) - 18 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it. 19 For there must also be factions among you, so that those who are approved may become evident among you.
You can add a number of New Testament passages to these - BUT do any of them tell you to do more than 'avoid', instruct', or 'separate' from those who disagree with your interpretation of Scripture?
The answer is clearly 'NO!' - and if you search the historical record you will find that the Cult of Papal Rome began the persecution and killing of those who simply followed these Scriptural admonitions because they disagreed with Papal Rome's interpretation of Scripture.
How the inspired Apostle Paul warned against false gospels - such as Papal Rome's!
All of this points to the un-Biblical origination of Papal Rome which - as we have proved repeatedly on these pages - was formed by the pagan Emperor Constantine who, under the control of Satan, formed the Cult of Papal Rome which will continue to deceive many ('if possible, even the elect ') in these Last Days:
Matthew 24:24-28 (NASB) - 24 "For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect. 25 "Behold, I have told you in advance. 26 "So if they say to you, 'Behold, He is in the wilderness,' do not go out, or, 'Behold, He is in the inner rooms,' do not believe them. 27 "For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes even to the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be. 28 "Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.
So if a Pope calling himself Vicar of Christ, i.e. 'a false Christ', says to you, 'Behold, He is in the Eucharist' - what are we to do? Jesus clearly instructed us: 'Do not believe them!' Why are Papal Roman Catholics and many Anglicans and Lutherans disobeying Jesus?
The error of believing in 'Evangelical Catholics' taught by Keith A. Fournier - or anyone else!
In the contemporary 'church' there seem to be a relatively small number of ekklesiae ('churches') who may be open to His Word still and many who have embraced the world and need to be confronted with the truth and informed on how to escape the wrath to come in these End Times. For too long ignorant 'Protestants' and other 'Non-conformist' groups have assumed that 'Roman Catholics' are Christians who simply have some slightly bizarre doctrines and practices that seem peculiar - but which will not prevent them from being saved. But it was not for nothing that Paul was inspired to warn of a false gospel which damns those who believe it, whether it comes from the Mormon church, Papal Rome, or anyone else:
Galatians 1:6-9 - I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed
Roman Catholics, like the members of every other cult, need to be treated with compassion, warned of cultic lies, and presented with the true gospel which alone can save them. When we know that Scripture informs us clearly:
Ephesians 2:8-10 (NASB) - 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
And then read that at the Council of Trent (1545-1563), the declarations of which are still in force, the Papal Roman Catholic Church formally condemned the Biblical doctrine of faith alone and grace alone. Consider the following declarations of Trent:
'If anyone says that justifying faith is nothing else than confidence in divine mercy, which remits sins for Christ's sake, or that it is this confidence alone that justifies us, LET HIM BE ANATHEMA' (Sixth Session, Canons Concerning Justification, Canon 12).
'If anyone says that the justice received is not preserved and also not increased before God through good works, but that those works are merely the fruits and signs of justification obtained, but not the cause of its increase, LET HIM BE ANATHEMA' (Sixth Session, Canons Concerning Justification, Canon 24).
In its most formal and authoritative statements since Trent, Papal Rome has continued to deny that salvation is by grace alone through Christ's atonement alone through faith alone without works or sacraments. Consider the following statements of the authoritative Vatican II Council of the mid-1960s, called by Pope John Paul XXIII and attended by more than 2,400 Catholic bishops:
'For it is the liturgy through which, especially in the divine sacrifice of the Eucharist, 'the work of our redemption is accomplished,' and it is through the liturgy, especially, that the faithful are enabled to express in their lives and manifest to others the mystery of Christ and the real nature of the true Church' (Vatican II, Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Introduction, para. 2).
'As often as the sacrifice of the cross by which 'Christ our Pasch is sacrificed' (1 Corinthians. 5:7) is celebrated on the altar, the work of our redemption is carried out' (Vatican II, Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Chapter 1, 3, p. 324).
'... [Christ] also willed that the work of salvation which they preached should be set in train through the sacrifice and sacraments, around which the entire liturgical [ritualistic] life revolves. Thus by Baptism men are grafted into the paschal mystery of Christ. ... They receive the spirit of adoption as sons' (Vatican II, Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Chap. 1, I, 5,6, pp. 23-24).
'From the most ancient times in the Church good works were also offered to God for the salvation of sinners, particularly the works which human weakness finds hard. Because the sufferings of the martyrs for the faith and for God's law were thought to be very valuable, penitents used to turn to the martyrs to be helped by their merits to obtain a more speedy reconciliation from the bishops. Indeed, the prayers and good works of holy people were regarded as of such great value that it could be asserted that the penitent was washed, cleansed and redeemed with the help of the entire Christian people' (Vatican II, Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Apostolic Constitution on the Revision of Indulgences, chap. 3, 6, pp. 78,79).
The colossal error high-lighted in red speaks volumes for the level of ignorance of Scripture that exists in Papal Rome - to this day (for more details see this page).
The growing co-operation between Roman Catholic organizations and major 'evangelical' ministries such as InterVarsity, Campus Crusade For Christ, Youth With A Mission, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Chuck Colson's Prison Fellowship, Paul Crouch's TBN, Pat Robertson's CBN, Rick Warren's Global PEACE Plan etc., reveals the depth of ignorance exhibited by leaders in every supposedly Christian organization and also within all the churches which co-operate with these ministries.
Do others who call themselves 'Christians' have any reason to be complacent!
'Evangelical Catholics' was written by Keith A. Fournier in 1990 and is a typical work inspired by Satan to lead many genuine Christians astray. Fournier claims to be a born-again Christian who is both fully evangelical and fully Catholic - truly an oxymoron - and his book is a plea for Protestants to join Catholics in a joint evangelization effort.
The first chapter of Fournier's work of deception ends with this invitation: "I invite you on a journey that will lead us home" (p23). What he means is quite clear. Chapter 3, the story of his return to the Roman Catholic Church, is titled "There's No Place Like Home." He declares that for anyone "to belong to Christ is to belong to his church" (p44). He does not mean some Protestant church or the body of Christ composed of all believers, but "the [Catholic] church of my childhood." Fournier tells of being the target of what he calls "virulent, false and angry anti-Catholic tracts" (p168) and of vowing, as a result, to fight the battle for unity "at every juncture with truth." A pity that he can give us no examples of these tracts which probably only appeared as he describes because of his typical Catholic ignorance of Scripture. Consequently, he gives us no "truth" about what Catholicism teaches and denies the charge that Catholics worship Mary and claims that she is only "honoured." Then, leaving a false impression, he changes the subject without mentioning that she is "honored" as follows:
Mary is co-redemptrix of the human race...because with Christ she ransomed mankind from the power of Satan. Jesus redeemed us with the blood of His body, Mary with the agonies of her heart....The church and the saints greet her thus: "You, O Mary, together with Jesus Christ, redeemed us."... God has ordained that no grace will be granted to us except through Mary. ....No one will be saved or obtain mercy except through you, O Heavenly Lady....No one will enter heaven without passing through Mary as one would pass through a door....O Mary, our salvation is in your hands. [there are many other unbelievable and utterly un-Biblical doctrines used by Papal Rome to deceive the 'ignorant and unstable' (2 Peter 3:15-17)].
While admitting that "genuine and important theological issues (p168) which "must be discussed and worked through" (p191) divide 'Protestants' and Catholics, he pleads for "unity" without dealing with such issues. In fact, his book confronts none of the serious issues that divide genuine Bible-believers from the the Cult of Papal Rome! He admits that, "Since 1973 I have been involved in ... the Catholic Charismatic Renewal or the Catholic Pentecostal Movement." (p146) and writes that: "I am deeply indebted to the evangelical and pentecostal Protestant traditions... [that] touched the lives of Catholic students at Duquesne University in the 1960s and finally reached me." (p164)
Without offering any proof, he calls the belief by 'Protestants' that Catholics have a false gospel "arrogant triumphalism." He trivializes as "a straw man" (p167) the vital issues of the 'Reformation' - issues so important that Catholics burned hundreds of thousands of Christians at the stake for refusing to violate their consciences. Dismissing it all as a "divorce" due to "misunderstandings" in the family, Fournier fails to deal realistically with the facts of history and insults both the martyrs and their executioners. Fournier's book calls 'Protestants' to "return home" to Rome.
Papal Rome does not have a Biblical gospel - all they have are continuous blasphemies dressed up to deceive the 'ignorant and unstable' (2 Peter 3:15-17)! Such were the beliefs of Pope John Paul II, whose theology Fournier wrote he "does not question" (p204). Fournier declares that Mary was kept from sin, which denies the gospel that "all have sinned" (Romans 3v23) and that Christ died for all mankind. If God could keep Mary, then He could have kept Eve and all human beings from sin, thus eliminating the need for Christ to die. While agreeing that the Roman Church "is not perfect in practice," Fournier admits no doctrinal error, but writes, "I believe in what the Catholic Church teaches" (p174). He also states that he will not embrace an ecumenism "that harms the purity of Catholic doctrine" (p157). Rome is never wrong! Is that not the very "arrogant triumphalism" he condemns in Protestants? Fournier, a lawyer, presents only that part of Roman Catholicism that evangelicals would not find too objectionable. He barely hints at Rome's heresies. For example: "It is not my intention...to explain more fully the Catholic concept of conversion as a continual process that necessarily takes place within the church" (pp 183- 84). Why not explain? Obviously because it would shock evangelicals. Like all the cults, Papal Rome and its so-called apologists, would like to forget that the historical account of the salvation of 'the thief on the cross' (Luke 23v43) blows away all of their turgid 'doctrine of demons' (1 Timothy 4:1-3) that add to the incomparable Gospel of Grace that brought free and full salvation in Christ - as Scripture declares repeatedly (e.g. Ephesians 2:8-10; 2 Timothy 1:8-9; Titus 3:5-7).
After 160 pages of talk about unity and evangelizing the world together, in Chapter 10 he acknowledges that "real and important" differences exist between the Catholic and Protestant understanding of the Lord's Supper - so much so that he refuses to partake of the bread and wine with Protestants! He admits: "As a Catholic Christian, I believe the Eucharist is the sacrament of unity. And because the church is divided, I embrace my church's position that I cannot participate in the Eucharist with Christians of other traditions. We are not one... it should grieve our hearts that we cannot go to a common table... But we cannot pretend there aren't differences in our understandings of the Eucharist, or the Lord's Supper. There are differences, and they are real and important." (p161).
He continues to plead for "love and unity" as members of the same "family," having "the same Head, the same Savior, the same Elder Brother, and the same Bridegroom - He who is at the heart of our evangelical fervor, Jesus Christ" (p167). Yet he will not partake of a common loaf and cup in the remembrance of Christ's death with Protestants who are, in fact, all anathematized by the Council of Trent for their beliefs! And he persists in urging Protestants to "accept" Catholics without dealing with these vital issues.
Fournier claims that he was away from Papal Rome long enough to hear the gospel and to receive Christ as Lord and Saviour and to be born again but, tragically, he made the mistake of returning to a Catholic altar and "feeling this Presence" (supposedly of the Lord Jesus Christ in the 'Eucharist') and this brought him back to the church of his childhood (p45). If only he had researched the experiences of other former Papal Roman Catholics who received the gift of 'discerning of spirits' (1 Corinthians 14:10; 1 John 4:1) and have recognized the demonic spirits present in Rome's un-Biblical sacrament. Because of the false teaching, that they are receiving eternal life by ingesting into their stomachs Christ's physical body and blood under the form of bread and wine, Catholics by the millions are prevented from receiving the spiritual gift of eternal life through believing in Christ in their hearts. And for centuries Rome did not allow the common people to partake of the wine turned to Christ's "blood" which it said was essential to life! This false gospel necessarily separates all genuine Christians from Catholics. Love and unity must be based upon truth, not mere sentiment. It is not an act of love for evangelicals to embrace as Christians and overlook the false gospels of all who call themselves "Christians," whether they be Mormons, Catholics, et al. The vital issue, which Fournier never deals with in his entire book, is: What is the gospel, how are we saved, what does the Bible itself teach?
Christ's love compels us not to "accept Catholics" or any believer in 'another Jesus' (2 Corinthians 11v4) and 'another gospel' (Galatians 1v6-9), but to inform them where and why their leaders dogmas and traditions contradict God's Word - as Papal Rome's clearly do! Until they recognise what is false in their religion, they can hardly embrace the truth, for no matter how clear the gospel is made it will be understood in the context of Catholicism and thus misunderstood - which is exactly why many leaders of 'Christian denominations' continue to be fooled into being 'unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?' (2 Corinthians 6:14). Fournier names many evangelical leaders who, instead of evangelizing Catholics, are working with them to "evangelize" the world and the deceptions of this ecumenical tide led by deceivers such as Rick Warren threatens to destroy more and more genuine ekklesiae ('churches') worldwide every year. Only those adhering closely to the Word of God will not 'bow the knee to Baal' (1 Kings 19:18) and continue to both teach and sound the warning that God has called His servants to declare - as the inspired apostle Paul wrote:
2 Timothy 4:1-5 (NASB) - 1 I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, 4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. 5 But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
Evangelical Belief in Reincarnation and Astrology Shockingly High, Survey Finds
To highlight how the truth of this passage above (from 2 Timothy 4:1-5) has been emphasized very clearly only recently, read on (or follow the link below):

The incredible ignorance of many of those who claim to be 'Christians', yet reveal belief in Reincarnation, Astrology, Yoga, and many other occult beliefs, reveals the truth of Jesus' words:
'Roughly half of self-identified evangelicals affirm at least one New Age belief, including a third who believe in psychics and one in five who believe in reincarnation or astrology, according to a new Pew Research Center poll.
The survey of Christians and non-Christians found that New Age beliefs may be more widespread than previously thought and, among self-identified evangelicals:
24 percent believe "spiritual energy can be located within physical things."
33 percent believe in psychics.
19 percent believe in reincarnation.
18 percent believe in astrology.
Forty-seven percent of evangelicals affirm at least one of the four New Age beliefs. That percentage is even higher among Catholics (70 percent), mainline Christians (67 percent), and Protestants from the historically black tradition (72 percent). Twenty-two percent of atheists and 56 percent of agnostics affirm at least one of the four New Age beliefs.
Among the general population, 69 percent of women and 55 percent of men believe in at least one New Age tenant.
"Just as women are more likely than men to identify with a religion and to engage in a number of religious practices, women also are more likely to hold New Age beliefs," Claire Gecewicz, a research analyst at Pew Research Center, wrote, "Across all four measures - belief in psychics, reincarnation, astrology and that spiritual energy can be found in objects - larger shares of women than men subscribe to these beliefs."
TCE: Noting the comments by ChristianHeadlines.com, we were more struck by these things:
1. They note that these New Age beliefs were held by 'Catholics (70 percent), mainline Christians (67 percent), and Protestants from the historically black tradition (72 percent)' - but 'Forty-seven percent of [people who call themselves!] evangelicals' were hardly much better!
2. While it is no surprise to find the high percentage of 'Catholics' in the survey (because they have not been encouraged to read the Word of God in the long history of the cult and, only recently, have a small minority made the effort to read it but, even then, the high likelihood that they read a Bible supplied with notes by their cult-leaders makes it unlikely that they will ever realize how deceived they are!) the close proximity of those who call themselves 'Christian' proves an obvious fact: the lack of any kind of thorough and zealous Bible reading and learning is now obvious in all of these groups, for the clear evidence that people were becoming extremely cold towards Almighty God has been around for more than a century!
3. The way 'Christian Headlines' lists 'Catholics' with this variety of 'Christians' makes it clear that they do not recognize Papal Rome for what it is - the biggest Christian cult in the history of the world!
4. While the small and relatively insignificant cults [e.g. 'The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' (commonly known as the Mormons) and Jehovah's Witnesses] that are recognized as being cults by the 'Christians' listed above share the same handicaps listed in point 2; the Mormons were taught to consider the Bible to be heavily corrupted by their founding 'prophet', Joseph Smith, and therefore their view of it is distorted badly and somewhat swamped and over-ruled by the 'Book of Mormon, 'Doctrine and Covenants', 'Book of Abraham', writings of their modern 'prophets' etc. - and the Jehovah's Witnesses have the same problem: their false prophets and leaders have produced a mangled Bible full of deliberate errors that modify clear truths, such as the Deity of Jesus, and they bombard their followers with a reading schedule of 'Awake' and 'Watchtower' magazines, as well as the many books written by their leaders and endless indoctrinating meetings, which all program their 'disciples' to believe what they are told to believe!
5. Finally, what does this prove? FIRSTLY, while once we could have written that only the cults were heavily influenced by the occult and 'doctrines of demons' (1 Timothy 4:1-3), now many supposedly genuine 'Christian churches' are so heavily polluted with extra-Biblical garbage, while also being ignorant of Scripture, that none of them can easily be trusted to teach you God's truth from His Word. You need a trusted guide to find a trustworthy ekklesia ('church'), but where do you find such a guide - ONLY in the Bible, which is alone the infallible Word of God, but many 'Christian churches' have really rejected the Bible and even claim 'it is corrupted'! There are a huge range of deceivers we could have also included - and many more beyond our huge list found on this page). Only the Holy Spirit promised by the Lord Jesus Christ is "the Spirit of truth" (Jn 14:17) who "leads into all truth" (Jn 16:13). Jesus said (John 8:31-32) "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free" - so pray to Almighty God before you read your Bible, that the Holy Spirit will lead you into this promised truth and take the Word in thoroughly before you ask Him to guide you to a trustworthy ekklesia ('church')]. SECONDLY - AND terrifyingly - all who are not soundly grounded in His Word are ALL ripe to be deceived by the Anti-Christ and his 'One World Religion'!
Let all who claim to believe in the Biblical Lord Jesus Christ and His Gospel of Free and Full Salvation take heed of the words of the inspired Apostle Paul who compared the disasters that befell Israel when they failed to follow the Words of the Lord and 'were overthrown in the wilderness' (1 Corinthians 10:3), for he concluded:
1 Corinthians 10:11-12 (ASV) - Now these things happened unto them by way of example; and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
Matthew 7:13-14 (KJV) - 'Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few [Greek: ὀλίγος - olígos, pronounced ol-ee'-gos - meaning: puny (in extent, degree, number, duration or value); brief(-ly), few, (a) little, short, small, a while] there be that find it'.
Think on this: at the time of writing (March 2019) the current world population of 7.2 billion is projected to increase by 1 billion over the next 12 years and reach 9.6 billion by 2050, according to a United Nations report launched recently, which points out that growth will be mainly in developing countries, with more than half in Africa.
There are an estimated 1.2 billion Roman Catholics in the world, according to Vatican figures. More than 40% of the world's Catholics live in Latin America - but Africa has seen the biggest growth in Catholic congregations in recent years
There are an estimated 800 million 'Protestants' in the world, comprising ~40% of the global 'Christian population'. The United States has more 'Protestants' than any other country (160 million), which is about 20% of the worldwide total number of Christians.
Adding all the groups who call themselves 'Christian' in the world produces a figure of about 2.4 billion 'total Christians'.
There are an estimated 1.8 billion Muslims in the world and the largest Muslim population in one country is in Indonesia, a nation home to 12.7% of the world's Muslims, followed by Pakistan (11.0%), and India (10.9%). About 20% of Muslims live in Arab countries.
There are an estimated 1.15 billion Hindus in the world and the largest Hindu population in one country is in India (94.3%).
Jesus made it clear that only those who believe in Him will inherit eternal life (John 3:15-16; 6:47; 14:6) - so all who believe in other religions, or a false Jesus (2 Cor. 11:4) are going to a lost eternity in Hell!
Now consider the fact that Jesus both claimed to be God and, by His Miracles, Words, and Deeds, proved that He was both Son of God and Son of Man and fully equal to His Father (see this article for solid proof).
Now, take the total number of 'Christians' from the tallies above - 2.4 billion - and divide by the current total world population: 7.2 billion. What percentage of the world's population claim to be 'Christian'?
That's right - 33.3% of the population think they are 'Christian' - of which 0.8 billion (11.1%) are 'Protestant' and 1.2 billion (16.7%) are Catholics!
Do you think Jesus' Words that only a 'few' (the Greek word meaning 'a puny number, a very small, or little, number') will 'find' Eternal Life, can include all of the 2.4 billion - or even 11.1%?
If you do - since when did 33.3% mean what Jesus called it - 'few'?
Clearly, a considerable number of the 2.4 billion 'Christians' are also going to be 'Left Behind' at the Rapture, or find they will be rejected on the 'Day of Judgement' (John 5:28-29; Romans 2:12; Revelation 20:12-13)!
Galatians 6:7-8 - Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
