The kings of the United Monarchy

The monarchy was the most important period in Israel's history.  We know from our previous study of I Kings 6v1 that the monarchy began with the crowning of Saul in 1050 B.C. He reigned forty years, then David reigned for forty years, and I Kings 11:42 records, "And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years."  These 120 years constitute "the era of the united monarchy" when Saul, David and then Solomon reigned consecutively.  It was the only time in Israel's history when all twelve tribes were united.  Knowing that Saul was crowned king in 1050 B.C. and that this period of the united monarchy lasted for 120 years shows us that it came to an end in 931 B.C.  In that year the kingdom divided and Jeroboam became king over the ten northern tribes and Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, reigned over Benjamin and Judah in the south. This period of divided monarchy lasted for 209 years, from 931 to 722 B.C., when the Assyrians invaded and dispersed the ten northern tribes.  From 722 until 586 B.C., was the era of Judah alone as a monarchy.  The Babylonian Captivity of the southern kingdom of Judah began in 586 B.C.  The death of King Zedekiah records the reign of the last human monarch ever to sit on the throne of Israel or Judah.  The balance of Old Testament history the balance of Israel's history takes place under the umbrella of the monarchy until the time of the Babylonian Captivity, the time of exile, and the return from captivity, a brief period known as the post-exilic community.1
